U.S.A.F. Capt. Brian Moore Wins 2009 Comstock, by James E. Murphy. Nellis Gun Club in exciting Las Vegas, Nevada hosted the 2009 Comstock February 19 through 22. The staff and management there made everyone who participated in the competition feel welcome. The weather was fantastic this year and allowed for some very good scores. Over $7,000.00 in guaranteed prize money available to the 58 participants added fuel to the competition as well. Shoot management Kat Pauley, Bob Gilmore, Don “Mac” McKown keeping the machines in top working order, and Chip Van Buskirk heading up registration, made the tournament first-rate. The festivities started off with North Las Vegas’ Capt. Brain Moore winning the doubles event with a 98. The12 gauge main event saw Capt. Brian Moore continue to maintain what would be a series of wins with a 100 and an easy shoot off defeat of the only other 100, runner-up Jim Murphy. Logandale, Nevada resident Neal Whitney, Rick Bagni of New Jersey, T. Phelps, K. Kanerelli, and Wol Moore took home the top prizes in AA, A, B, C and D respectively. Ron Whitney took home the top spot in E class with a solid 84. The 20 gauge competition was dominated by gun champ David Wells’ 100. During an exciting shoot off, Nellis’ reigning club champion Stan Salter took on the other 99’s, Neal Whitney and Jim Murphy, to emerge as runner up. Linda Hicks won B class, Frank Edmonson won C class and Audrey Wells won D class. The 28 gauge main event saw 5 100’s turned in by gun champ, Phillip Mills and eventual runner up, Dave Schultz. Just behind was AA class champ Capt. Brian Moore, AA2 Ray Ayestaran and AA3 Aris Melonas. Donna Fusco won A class with a 99, and Bobby Scott took B class with a 97. Rounding out the 28 gauge event were C class champion Tanner Bissell with a 94 and D class champion Frank Edmonson with a 92. On Sunday the weather remained perfect for the .410 competition. Usually when the shooters pick up the little gun, the wind begins to blow but not this time. Continuing his great performance with a 99, Capt. Brian Moore walked away with the .410 gun champion prize and simultaneously sealed his victory at the tournament with no one else in a position to challenge him. Capt. Brian Moore edged out Neal Whitney at runner up. Rick Warren took AA class with a 97. Doug Repaal of Arizona took home A class with a strong 96. Thomas Keith Phelps won B class and Nellis Gun Club’s lady concurrent champ Sandi Beeson, took C class with a 90. Northern Nevada’s Cliff Alexander, minus his long time four-legged companion, took home D class champ money in the .410. When all the dust settled the 2009 HOA and HAA Champion was Capt. Brain Moore who reigned supreme with a 397 HOA and 495 HAA. Doug Repaal was the Runner Up in the HOA event with a solid 392. Lady champ was Donna Fusco with a 382. She was regularly seen stepping up to shoot off this weekend. Capt. Brian Moore will defend his titles in 2010 when the focus will be on increasing the number of attendees. Shoot management offered surveys to the participants to obtain input in the hopes of making the shoot better next time around. Look for changes and improvement in 2010. The hope is that one of the oldest shoots in the West can continue to be viable in these challenging economic times and be here for years to come.
